Step by step guide to applying for a NIE number in Spain. Documents, costs and tips.
What is a NIE number?
The NIE number (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is the tax identification number for foreigners in Spain. It is required for:
- Purchasing property
- Opening a bank account
- Setting up utilities
- Signing contracts
Where to apply?
Option 1: At a Spanish consulate
- Advantage: you don't need to travel to Spain
- Disadvantage: longer processing time (2-6 weeks)
- Book an appointment via the consulate website
Option 2: In Spain
- At the Oficina de Extranjeros or police station
- Faster (sometimes same day)
- You need to book an appointment (cita previa) via sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es
Option 3: Through a lawyer
- Most convenient: the lawyer handles everything with a power of attorney
- Additional cost: €100-200 on top of normal fees
Required documents
- Form EX-15 — fully completed and signed
- Valid passport — original + copy
- Reason for application — purchase agreement, employment contract, or explanatory letter
- Proof of payment — the NIE costs approximately €12 (modelo 790, código 012)
- Passport photo — not always required, but bring one
Costs
- Government fee: approximately €12 (modelo 790)
- Via lawyer: €100-300 extra
- Total: €12-300 depending on method
Tips
- Start early: the process can take weeks, especially at consulates
- The NIE number never changes — once assigned, it's yours for life
- You can also apply digitally if you have a digital certificate
- Keep the NIE document safe, you'll need it for every official transaction in Spain
