Jak uzyskać numer NIE w Hiszpanii

Step by step guide to applying for a NIE number in Spain. Documents, costs and tips.

What is a NIE number?

The NIE number (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is the tax identification number for foreigners in Spain. It is required for:

  • Purchasing property
  • Opening a bank account
  • Setting up utilities
  • Signing contracts

Where to apply?

Option 1: At a Spanish consulate

  • Advantage: you don't need to travel to Spain
  • Disadvantage: longer processing time (2-6 weeks)
  • Book an appointment via the consulate website

Option 2: In Spain

  • At the Oficina de Extranjeros or police station
  • Faster (sometimes same day)
  • You need to book an appointment (cita previa) via sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es

Option 3: Through a lawyer

  • Most convenient: the lawyer handles everything with a power of attorney
  • Additional cost: €100-200 on top of normal fees

Required documents

  1. Form EX-15 — fully completed and signed
  2. Valid passport — original + copy
  3. Reason for application — purchase agreement, employment contract, or explanatory letter
  4. Proof of payment — the NIE costs approximately €12 (modelo 790, código 012)
  5. Passport photo — not always required, but bring one

Costs

  • Government fee: approximately €12 (modelo 790)
  • Via lawyer: €100-300 extra
  • Total: €12-300 depending on method

Tips

  • Start early: the process can take weeks, especially at consulates
  • The NIE number never changes — once assigned, it's yours for life
  • You can also apply digitally if you have a digital certificate
  • Keep the NIE document safe, you'll need it for every official transaction in Spain
