La Herrada

La Herrada is a small residential urbanisation in the municipality of Los Montesinos, situated in the southern Alicante province — technically Costa Blanca, at its point where it borders the Costa Cálida. It sits roughly 8 kilometres inland from the Mar Menor coastline near Torrevieja, at a gentle elevation that places it above the flat salt-lagoon plain rather than on the seafront itself. The surrounding terrain is characterised by low hills, orange and lemon groves, and the proximity of the Salinas de Torrevieja natural park. Day-to-day character is that of a quiet, low-density urbanisation rather than a town centre: no historic old quarter, no seafront promenade. The nearest service hub with supermarkets, medical facilities and a weekly market is Los Montesinos village, roughly 2 kilometres away. Torrevieja, the principal commercial and healthcare centre for this area, is approximately 15 kilometres by road. Year-round residency is increasingly common here, driven largely by northern European buyers attracted by the lower land prices compared to the coast.

Los Montesinos village, 2 kilometres from La Herrada, has a weekly Wednesday market, a municipal swimming pool, and a small commercial strip covering basic daily needs. For a larger weekly shop, Ciudad Quesada — roughly 8 kilometres north — has a commercial centre with a Mercadona and several retail units. The nearest public hospital with full emergency cover is Hospital Vega Baja in Orihuela, approximately 20 kilometres by the CV-95 and CV-91. There is a smaller public health centre in Los Montesinos for routine consultations. International schooling is not available within Los Montesinos itself; the nearest established options are in the Orihuela Costa and Torrevieja corridor, roughly 15–20 kilometres away. The Torrevieja coastline — Playa del Cura and Playa de los Locos among others — is reachable in around 15 minutes by car. The Mar Menor shore near Lo Pagán is a similar distance to the east.

Alicante-Elche Airport (ALC) is the primary international gateway, approximately 45 kilometres north of La Herrada — a drive of roughly 35–40 minutes via the AP-7 toll motorway or 50–60 minutes on the free N-332 through Torrevieja. Murcia International Airport (RMU), near Corvera, is roughly 50 kilometres to the south and handles an increasing number of European routes, often with shorter access times in summer when the AP-7 northbound is congested. There is no passenger rail in this part of the Costa Blanca south; the nearest RENFE station is in Torrevieja, limited in service. Local bus connections from Los Montesinos to Torrevieja run several times daily but are infrequent and impractical for regular commuting. A car is essential for residents of La Herrada. Murcia city is reachable in around 40 minutes via the AP-7/A-30; Alicante city in approximately 45 minutes.

The concrete case for La Herrada comes down to one trade-off: more house per euro, at the cost of coastal access. The surrounding area is quiet and predominantly residential, which suits buyers who will use the property as a full-time or extended-stay home and do not need resort-level animation within walking distance. It is less suited to buyers who want to walk to a beach, a marina or a town centre, or who are testing Spain with a short holiday-use property. The inland location also means direct sea views are not part of the offer.
