Unlike the more developed resort strips to the west, El Peñoncillo has no significant old town or commercial centre of its own — it functions primarily as a residential coastal zone, with low-rise urbanisations built along and just above the beach. The permanent population is small; the area is quieter outside the summer months than neighbouring Nerja to the east or Torre del Mar to the west. The N-340 coastal road runs directly through, connecting it to both towns within minutes. It is not a self-contained town in the functional sense: residents rely on Torrox Costa or Torre del Mar for most daily services.

El Peñoncillo itself has no hospital and minimal retail. The nearest public hospital is the Hospital Comarcal de la Axarquía in Vélez-Málaga, approximately 20 km west. For everyday shopping — supermarkets, pharmacy, bank — Torrox Costa is the practical base, roughly 3 km east along the N-340, with a more complete commercial offer in Torre del Mar a further 8 km west. The beach at El Peñoncillo is pebbly and stretches without the summer crowds typical of Nerja's Burriana beach. There is no marina within the settlement; the nearest is in Málaga city or the small fishing harbour at Caleta de Vélez, around 12 km west. For international schooling, the nearest established options are in the greater Málaga area, 50–55 km west — El Peñoncillo is not within realistic daily commuting distance of any international school on the Axarquía coast itself.

Málaga Airport (AGP) is approximately 55–60 km west, translating to a drive of around 50–65 minutes via the A-7 coastal road, depending on traffic through Málaga city. The AP-7 toll autopista does not extend this far east along the Costa del Sol, so the A-7/N-340 is the primary route. This road is single-carriageway in stretches through the Axarquía coast, and summer traffic can extend drive times noticeably. There is no rail connection; the Cercanías commuter line from Málaga terminates at Fuengirola to the west. Local bus services run along the N-340 connecting Málaga, Torre del Mar, Torrox and Nerja, but frequency is limited outside peak season. Nerja is roughly 10 km east (10–15 minutes), and Málaga city centre is around 55 km, typically 50–60 minutes outside peak hours.

The trade-off is real — no walkable town centre, limited local services, and a longer drive to Málaga Airport than from the western Costa del Sol. This suits a buyer who prioritises coast over convenience, does not need to commute, and prefers low density to the busier resort environment of Torre del Mar. It does not suit buyers who want urban amenities within walking distance, reliable public transport, or a broad choice of new-build product. The east-facing orientation and the pebbly beach are practical points to verify on a site visit before committing.
