Neighborhood guide: Punta Prima
Overview
Punta Prima is a small coastal urbanisation on the southern Costa Blanca, sitting between Torrevieja to the north and Orihuela Costa to the south, in the province of Alicante. It fronts a sheltered, east-facing bay — Playa de Punta Prima — which keeps the beach relatively calm and means the residential streets running back from the waterfront get morning sun. The area is almost entirely made up of modern low-rise urbanisations built from the 1980s onwards; there is no old town or historic centre. Day-to-day activity is seasonal in character: quieter from November through February, noticeably busier from Easter through September, with a resident base that skews heavily international — principally northern European buyers who use properties as second homes or retirement bases. For daily services, most residents drive to Torrevieja, roughly 5 km north on the N-332, where the full range of supermarkets, medical facilities and administrative offices is concentrated.
Amenities
Within Punta Prima itself, amenities are limited to what a small beach urbanisation carries: a handful of beach bars, a supermarket, and a pharmacy. For anything beyond that, Torrevieja — 5 km north on the N-332 — is the practical hub. Hospital Universitario de Torrevieja, a public hospital on the Carretera Torrevieja-Guardamar, serves this stretch of coast and handles both emergency and specialist care. Weekly fresh-produce markets run in Torrevieja on specific weekday mornings, and the town centre has a covered market (Mercado Municipal) open daily. La Zenia Boulevard, a large open-air shopping centre about 4 km south near Orihuela Costa, covers retail needs from supermarkets to household goods in a single stop. International schooling is not available in Punta Prima itself; the nearest established international-school cluster is around Orihuela Costa and the Vega Baja area, roughly 10–20 km depending on the specific school. Playa de Punta Prima is the immediate beach, walkable from the residential streets directly above the bay.
Transportation
Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport is the primary gateway, approximately 40–45 km north of Punta Prima — typically 35 to 45 minutes by car depending on traffic, using the AP-7 toll motorway or the slower, free N-332 coastal road. Murcia International Airport (Región de Murcia) offers a second option roughly 60 km to the south, useful for certain low-cost routes. By road, the N-332 runs directly through or alongside the urbanisations linking Torrevieja, Punta Prima, La Zenia and Cabo Roig; the AP-7 provides faster access north toward Alicante and south toward Cartagena and Murcia. Public transport on this stretch of coast is bus-only — ALSA and local services connect to Torrevieja, but frequency drops sharply outside summer months and the service does not extend reliably to beachfront urbanisations. There is no rail connection. Residents without a car will find day-to-day logistics genuinely difficult outside peak season. Torrevieja city centre is around a 10-minute drive; Alicante city is approximately 50 minutes.
Why buy here
The concrete case for Punta Prima over its immediate neighbours rests on one thing: direct beach access from a low-rise residential setting, without the density or noise of Torrevieja's city seafront. Buyers who want to walk to the water rather than drive to it, and who prefer a quieter residential environment over a town centre, are the realistic fit. Buyers who prioritise value per square metre over coastline proximity will find better ratios a few kilometres inland in Orihuela Costa. Buyers who want year-round activity, restaurants and nightlife within walking distance will find Torrevieja city more practical. Punta Prima suits someone whose primary requirement is a seafront address and low-maintenance surroundings — and who is comfortable with a car being essential and with a market where resale liquidity depends heavily on continued northern European demand.
