Villajoyosa — officially Vila Joiosa — sits on the Costa Blanca, roughly 30 kilometres north-east of Alicante and 30 kilometres south-west of Benidorm. It is a coastal town, not a resort strip, built around a functioning fishing port and an old quarter of tightly packed, brightly painted facades that face directly onto the sea along the Calle del Mar seafront. That old town is genuinely inhabited year-round, which sets the pace of the place. Beyond the historic centre, the town spreads inland and along the coast into lower-density residential urbanisations on the surrounding hillsides, where most new-build activity is concentrated. The coastline runs roughly south-east facing, giving beaches reasonable afternoon sun across the year. Playa Centro and Playa Norte are the main town beaches, both within walking distance of the centre. The overall character is a mid-sized Spanish town — population around 35,000 — where the seasonal tourist overlay is lighter than Benidorm to the north, but the infrastructure is more developed than smaller villages like Altea or l'Alfàs del Pi.

For secondary or emergency healthcare, the main public hospital serving Villajoyosa is Hospital Universitario de San Juan, located in San Juan de Alicante, approximately 25 kilometres south-west along the N-332 and A-70. The town itself has a local health centre (Centro de Salud) on Calle Canalejas for routine GP consultations. Day-to-day shopping is handled within the town — there is a Mercadona on the northern edge of the urban area — but for a large commercial centre, buyers tend to drive to the Zenia Boulevard or Puerta de Alicante retail parks, both in the greater Alicante area around 30–35 kilometres away. The covered municipal market in the old town operates on weekday mornings and is genuinely used by residents rather than tourists. International schooling is not available in Villajoyosa itself; the nearest established options are in the El Campello–Alicante corridor to the south. The town has a small marina, used primarily by local fishing vessels and leisure craft, adjacent to the old town.

Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport is the relevant airport, approximately 40 kilometres south-west of Villajoyosa — a drive of roughly 35–40 minutes via the AP-7 toll motorway or 45–55 minutes on the free N-332 coastal road. The AP-7 junction at El Campello gives the most direct toll access. Valencia Airport is around 130 kilometres to the north, roughly 90 minutes' drive via the AP-7. Within the region, the N-332 is the spine road running through the town itself; the AP-7 runs slightly inland and is the practical choice for longer journeys north to Benidorm or south to Alicante. There is no rail connection in Villajoyosa — the nearest TRAM (Alicante's narrow-gauge coastal tram) terminus is at El Campello, about 15 kilometres south, from where services run into central Alicante. ALSA buses connect Villajoyosa with Alicante and Benidorm on a regular schedule, but car ownership is effectively necessary for comfortable daily use of this stretch of coast.

The concrete case for Villajoyosa over its immediate neighbours comes down to scale and authenticity. It functions as a real town — fishing port, covered market, resident population — rather than a purpose-built resort, which affects everything from winter opening hours to the ratio of Spanish to foreign neighbours. Compared to Benidorm, 30 kilometres north, it offers significantly less high-rise density and tourist infrastructure, which suits buyers who want coast without resort noise. Compared to Altea or Calpe, it has more practical daily amenities within the town itself. The trade-off is airport distance: at roughly 40 kilometres from Alicante Airport, it is not the closest Costa Blanca option — El Campello or Mutxamel are nearer. Villajoyosa suits a buyer who wants a functioning Spanish coastal town, year-round liveability, a short walk to a real beach, and is not looking for a golf resort or a nightlife hub.
